Happy Learning: A brand new workshop and theatre programme for schools, targeting young people with Early Years; EAL, SEN and BESD.

Background
WHATEVER Makes You Happy is a new initiative for Greenwich & Lewisham Young People’s Theatre, launched in 2011. It seeks specifically to increase good mental health and wellbeing amongst vulnerable young people using drama and the arts to build confidence, self-esteem and resilience skills, and to challenge prejudice through the power of theatre. It follows 10 years of groundbreaking practice with refugees and asylum-seekers, and several other projects with Looked After children, young carers, young people with learning difficulties and disabilities and young survivors of domestic abuse. The WHATEVER agenda will operate across the whole company and will include a drama group for young people with moderate learning difficulties, intervention work in schools, theatre that raises awareness about bullying and mental health problems and specialist support for young people with barriers to inclusion to join our mainstream youth theatre.

Feedback
"It was absolutely fantastic - I've learnt new drama skills and made new friends. The people here showed me how to control my emotions and they always ask if you're ok if you look upset and try to solve the problem".

"It’s made me gain more friends and made me face your fear of getting up on stage and performing. It has been really fun and I recommend everyone with learning difficulties coming, because it gave me a chance to mix with new people as I had trouble making new friends." (Participant)

"For CAMHS, Whatever Youth Arts has been a great way to work more closely with the voluntary sector, increase access to services and help to destigmatise mental health issues. We hope to be able to work with GLYPT again to run another programme in future."
